Asbestos Trust Fund
After NARCO filed for Chapter 11 Bankruptcy in 2002, they made a plan to reorganize. In 2008, they officially reorganized and in 2013, they began the NARCO Asbestos Trust Fund. The trust was funded with $6.32 billion. The current payment percentage for successful claims is 100%. Most payment percentages are not usually set this high. Honeywell, the company that acquired NARCO in 1979 was responsible for their products during the merge. This included the brake pads and linings that NARCO manufactured from the 1970s to the 1980s.

History of Asbestos Use
More commonly known as NARCO, the North American Refectories Company was founded in 1929 and manufactured products made to withstand heat. NARCO flourished and was quickly one of the top manufacturers of refractory products.
At the same time the company was being founded, asbestos in products was at a peak, and NARCO decided to use it in their products. Companies often add asbestos to products such as cement and roofing to achieve heat resistance. Asbestos is a group of minerals that contain fibers that stop heat, and companies are allowed to use the product as long as it doesn’t account for more than 1% of the product. NARCO products were using asbestos in their products above the legal limit.
NARCO continued growing, and their products were found in various places including worksites, mines, oil refineries, and ships. In 1979, NARCO was acquired by a company called Honeywell which was a producer of asbestos products. The two companies’ merger lasted seven years until 1986, but it helped expand NARCO products into industrial plants and steel mills.
When the merger ended between NARCO and Honeywell, the company was taken over by ANH Refractories, another asbestos company. By the time they stopped using asbestos they had locations all over the United States including Indiana, Kentucky, and Michigan.
