Asbestos Trust Funds Claims and Mesothelioma
U.S Asbestos Bankruptcy Trusts Funds have paid out nearly 21 billion to more than 600,000 asbestos claimants. There are about 60 active Asbestos Trust Funds with an estimated $32 billion in remaining assets.
Asbestos Settlement Trusts were established to help compensate workers and their families for asbestos exposure causing Mesothelioma and other asbestos-related diseases. When an Asbestos company establishes a Trust Fund all settlements are managed by trustees that decide the compensation amounts paid to Mesothelioma claimants. U. S. Courts allow Asbestos defendants to file for protection under a legal process known as bankruptcy reorganization. This allows the company to pay claims and stay in business.
Asbestos Trust Fund settlements typically do not come with an admission of guilt by the asbestos company that set up the trust.

They had been facing multi-billion-dollar liability claims when they finally filed. The company decided to reorganize, and in 2007 they established the Owens Corning and Fibreboard Corporation Asbestos Personal Injury Trust Fund. The fund was created with $1.56 billion to tackle the asbestos-related lawsuits. Each case is evaluated based on various factors including age, exposure, and illness. History of Asbestos Use
In 1938 Corning Glass and Owens-Illinois created a joint venture in Ohio called Owens-Corning Fiberglas. The company did well its first year ending with 2 million in sales. One of the main materials in their products was asbestos. They started using it when they were founded in products such as tiles and blankets. Their most well-known product that utilized asbestos was their Kaylo Branded Products. Kaylo was a brand of pipe insulation used in high-temperature locations and was placed in various areas, including houses, airports, power plants, and petrochemical facilities. At the peak of the company around a thousand ships used the product.
Companies often add asbestos to products such as piping and cement to achieve heat resistance. Asbestos is a group of minerals that contain fibers that stop heat, and companies are allowed to use the product as long as it doesn’t account for more than 1% of the product. Owens-Corning Fiberglas products were using asbestos in their products above the legal limit amount.
Kaylo brand pipe and covering were sold for twenty years from 1953-1973. Not only was the product used in a commercial and industrial location, but it was also used in residential homes.
The company excelled, and in 1996 their name became Owens Corning, and they began to manufacture various building materials. The company stopped using asbestos in the Kaylo Brand in 1972 and stopped altogether in the 1970s. It was too late because they had already exposed thousands of workers and the general public to large amounts of asbestos. When exposed to large amounts of the materials, it can cause diseases such as mesothelioma, asbestosis, and cancers with serious long-term effects.
