Biopsy Procedures Mesothelioma
Mesothelioma Medical Terms:
A Mesothelioma biopsy procedure is used to collect suspect cells or tissue samples that help doctors positively confirm a diagnosis of Mesothelioma. Several different biopsy procedures may be used depending on the location of cancer cells, the age of the patient, and the overall health of the Mesothelioma patient. Biopsy tests are one of the most definitive ways to diagnose malignant Mesothelioma.
Mesothelioma Biopsy Procedures Include:
- Bronchoscopic Biopsy: Involves passing a long, thin, flexible tube down the throat to examine the airways for tumors and remove a small sample through the tube.
- Excisional Biopsy: Involves attempting to remove all of the affected areas rather than taking a small tissue sample. (Accompanied by greater risks for the patient).
- Fine-Needle Aspiration Biopsy: Involves the physician using a long thin needle to remove a sample of the cancer tumor.
- Incisional/Core Biopsy: Involves removing a small part of the tumor if the needed sample is in an easy access location.
- Laparoscopy: Procedure involves examining the inside of the abdomen.
- Mediastinoscopy: Procedure that examines the center of the chest around the heart to determine if cancer has spread to lymph nodes in the chest or neck.
- Peritoneoscopy and Laparotomy: Involves doctor making an incision in the abdominal wall to insert a tiny lighted tube to examine inside the chest cavity or abdomen.
- Thoracotomy: Involves doctor making an incision between 2 ribs to gather a cancer tissue sampled.
- Thoracoscopy: Involves examining the space between the chest wall and lungs by inserting a long, thin tube into the chest to obtain small tissue samples.
- Surgical Biopsy: This is an invasive procedure needed to cut out a large enough tissue sample to make a diagnosis or totally removing the tumor.

Asbestos Exposure and Mesothelioma Lawsuits
Asbestos manufacturers knew as far back as the early 1920’s that asbestos caused asbestosis and the first case of malignant Mesothelioma was definitively linked to asbestos exposure in workers and laborers in 1964.
More than 600,000 asbestos and Mesothelioma cases have been brought against asbestos manufacturers and distributors, claiming the companies failed to protect workers and laborers from harmful asbestos contamination, and failed to warn workers about health risks.
The World Health Organization reported that there have been 92,253 mesothelioma deaths (and counting) reported by 83 countries.
Thousands of asbestos-containing products and materials were used throughout construction buildings trades, industrial plants, residential buildings, factories, power plants, chemical plants, refineries, shipyards and manufacturing plants exposing workers and laborers to deadly asbestos dust and fibers.
Mesothelioma cancer has 4 stages and rarely diagnosed in stages 1 and 2 because it looks like many other diseases like COPD, a chronic cough, the flu and pneumonia. If you have a history of work-related asbestos exposure you should be checked each year by a qualified doctor.
Global Asbestos Disaster Study Estimates More than 39,000 USA Deaths Annually from Asbestos-Related Diseases.
Specifically, asbestos contributes to 34,270 lung cancer deaths, 3,161 mesothelioma deaths, 787 ovarian cancer deaths, 443 larynx cancer deaths and 613 chronic asbestosis death. Source: www.adao.us
