Republic Powdered Metals Asbestos Trust
Asbestos Trust Funds Claims and Mesothelioma
U.S Asbestos Bankruptcy Trusts Funds have paid out nearly 21 billion to more than 600,000 asbestos claimants. There are about 60 active Asbestos Trust Funds with an estimated $32 billion in remaining assets.
Asbestos Settlement Trusts were established to help compensate workers and their families for asbestos exposure causing Mesothelioma and other asbestos-related diseases. When an Asbestos company establishes a Trust Fund all settlements are managed by trustees that decide the compensation amounts paid to Mesothelioma claimants. U. S. Courts allow Asbestos defendants to file for protection under a legal process known as bankruptcy reorganization. This allows the company to pay claims and stay in business.
Asbestos Trust Fund settlements typically do not come with an admission of guilt by the asbestos company that set up the trust.

Asbestos Trust Fund
After Bondex and its parent company, Specialty Products Holding Corporation, filed for bankruptcy in 2010. At the time, they filed 20,000 cases that needed handling.
Four years later, in 2014, Republic Powered Metals also filed for bankruptcy and offered $797.5 million to start an asbestos trust fund. In July of 2016, the Bondex trust fund was officially established and began accepting claims.
Currently, the payment percentage for successful claims is 22%. Individuals diagnosed have with asbestos-related illnesses have three years from the time of diagnosis to file a claim. Every case is evaluated on various factors including: illness, age, and exposure.
Republic Powered Metals first began accumulating lawsuits involving their partnership with Bondex products in 1980. They continued to receive thousands of lawsuits, and in 2000 they had a spike in cases. They had to pay out $8.2 million in asbestos liabilities.
In the next ten years from 2000-2010, the company paid between forty and eighty million every year. Republic Powered Metals came from Reardon Company’s Bondex products. The locations with the most claims included: Floria, Mississippi, Texas, and Ohio.
In May of 2010, Bondex and its parent company Specialty Products Holding Corporation, could no longer handle the financial demand of asbestos claims and filed for bankruptcy after having over 20,000 cases to deal with.
Since the use of asbestos was highly prevalent in the Bondex products that Republic Powered Metals was working with, many individuals, including workers and the general public, were put at risk. Since the company expanded, there were multiple locations where individuals may have come into contact with asbestos materials. Some workers were exposed on a routine schedule and, due to effects, have asbestos-related health complications. Various occupations that may have been affected include: boiler repair technicians, boiler workers, chemical plant workers, construction workers, demolition workers, drywall tapers, electricians, factory workers, handy persons, homeowners, hopper loaders, industrial workers, insulators, laboratory technicians, masons, metal plant workers, mill workers, oil refinery workers, painters, pipefitters, plumbers, power plant workers, railway workers, roofers, rubber plant workers, shipyard workers, textile plant workers, welders, and Veterans of the armed forces.
History of Asbestos Use
Republic Powered Metals was founded in May of 1947 by Frank C. Sullivan. They were initially known for manufacturing weatherproof and rustproof roof coating. The company did well and began to expand by selling Bondex products containing asbestos. In 1966, they acquired the Reardon Company, which also contained Bondex products.
Bondex products such as joint compounds, coatings, and adhesives all contained a material called asbestos. Companies often add asbestos to products such as cement and roof to achieve heat resistance. Asbestos is a group of minerals that contain fibers that stop heat and companies are allowed to use the product as long as it doesn’t account for more than 1% of the product. Employees working for them were exposed to environments full of airborne asbestos fibers. When exposed to large amounts of the toxic material, it can cause diseases such as mesothelioma, asbestosis, and cancers with serious long-term effects.
Republic Powered Metals sold products for industrial, commercial, and domestic use. In the 1980s, the company started receiving thousands of asbestos-related lawsuits.
