After Bondex and its parent company, Specialty Products Holding Corporation, filed for bankruptcy in 2010. At the time, they filed 20,000 cases that needed handling.
Four years later, in 2014, Republic Powered Metals also filed for bankruptcy and offered $797.5 million to start an asbestos trust fund. In July of 2016, the Bondex trust fund was officially established and began accepting claims.

Bondex products such as joint compounds, coatings, and adhesives all contained a material called asbestos. Companies often add asbestos to products such as cement and roof to achieve heat resistance.
